5 great freezer bags for baby food 2024
DO I NEED FREEZER BAGS WHEN WEANING?
There are three different uses for freezer bags when weaning a baby.
For freezing a batch of baby food purée. If you just need a small piece, you can break it off for defrosting.
For freezing finger foods like steamed carrots.
You could also freeze ice cubes of purée in a tray and then transfer them into a freezer bag so that the ice cube tray can be used again.
What features should I look out for?
Reusable bags. A reusable freezer bag is a more eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic bags. Just wash and dry them after use and they are ready to go again.
Leakproof bags. A double seal will prevent leaks and a zip will make them easy to open and close.
Labelling: An area for labelling enables you to record the contents and date of freezing.
Material. Plastic bags should be food-grade and BPA-free.
Expandable gusset: If the bag can stand up it will make filling easier.
How do you use them?
If the food is cooked, cool it first then fill the bags, expelling as much air as possible to avoid freezer burn.
Fruit and vegetable purées, white fish and poultry can keep for up to six months in the freezer. Use anything else within 3 months.
Defrost overnight in the fridge. Once defrosted, make sure it’s eaten on the same day. Baby purées can be cooked from frozen but make sure they’re heated until they are piping hot and stir regularly. Allow the food to cool before giving it to your baby.
