6 of the best fireguards 2024
DO YOU NEED A FIREGUARD WHEN CHILDPROOFING A HOME?
If you have a real, open fire in your home, a fireguard is essential as it could protect your child from getting seriously burned. It’s also important to teach them not to go near a fire but accidents and falls happen. If you have a log burner, these can become very hot to the touch, so a fireguard should really be used.
COULD YOU JUST USE A FIRE SCREEN?
A fireguard is much safer than a fire screen. A fire screen could be moved by a child or they could fall into it and knock it over.
WHAT to consider WHEN CHOOSING A FIREGUARD
Size: The best one for you will be one that fits. Measure your fire first. If it’s an awkwardly shaped heath, get a fireguard with panels that can be angled.
Fixing: It should be fixed to the wall with screws to make it properly secure. Position it approximately 70cm away from the fire and definitely above 40cm as you don’t want a child to be able to reach through to the fire.
Top: Some have a top to stop children from throwing things in the fire like your passport and credit cards
Heat-resistant: It should be made from a heat-resistant material so that it is not hot to the touch.
Storage: If you plan to store it in the summer, folding panels will ensure it takes up less space.
Height: It needs to be at least 70cm high and there should be nothing that can be climbed by it.
Door gate: Some have a child safety door to give easy access to the fire for the adult.
