10 of the best prams for newborn babies 2024
Prams for newborns need some kind of carrycot/bassinet that allows them to lie flat. Many prams have a detachable carrycot (sometimes sold separately) so they can be converted into a pushchair when the baby is around six months old. Some of these carrycots are designed to be suitable for overnight sleeping.
You can also buy ‘travel systems’ which include the carrycot and a car seat and ‘travel system compatible’ prams, which means a car seat can be attached to the chassis using the correct adaptors.
What’s the difference between a pram, pushchair, buggy and stroller?
Pram - a sturdy chassis with a carrycot/bassinet where newborns to six-month-olds can lie flat. Occasionally also called a buggy.
Pushchair - the same sturdy chassis but the carrycot is replaced with a seat that can recline for children 6 months and older. The seat can be facing towards or away from the pushing parent. It is also sometimes called a buggy.
Stroller - a much more lightweight pushchair that is usually for toddlers and young children. It is also sometimes called a pushchair or buggy.
Buggy - this can refer to all kinds of baby transportation but most usually for a pushchair.
When choosing a pram consider:
whether you want it to be travel system compatible. I.e. do you want to attach a car seat to the chassis?
where you’ll mostly use it. All-terrain prams are generally heavier and good for country walks but not so suitable if you’ll be using a lot of public transport, for example.
how big a storage basket you need. If you don’t have a car, a big basket will be useful.
how compact it is when folded. This is especially important if you don’t have much space at home or if you’ll be putting in the car a lot.
whether it can convert to a double if you have plans to extend your family in the near future.
whether you need it to grow with your child and have a toddler seat that can be reversed from parent facing to outwards facing. A good seat will have multiple reclines for naps and can be used until your child is 15-25kg.
whether it has adjustable handles that make it easier to push. This is especially useful if there are pushers of various heights!
what accessories are included? Does it come with a rain cover, a cup holder or car seat adaptors? With some prams, you also have to buy the newborn carrycot (also called bassinet) separately.
how big the sunshade is? Many prams now have fully extending sunshades with UV protection.
the size and weight of the pram. If you will have to carry it up and downstairs a lot - go for something light. If you will be using it on a bus a lot, make sure it’s not too wide. And if it will go in the boot of the car, make sure it will fit.
whether the carrycot can be used for overnight sleeping. This is handy for occasional nights away from home.
if you want to go jogging with your pram. Some have been specially designed for this.
whether you need the fabrics to be machine washable.
How to deal with pram unfriendly homes
If you’ve got steps up to your home or live in an upper-floor flat with no lift, here are your options:
Get a really lightweight pram like the Babyzen Yoyo which you can carry up to steps.
Get a pram with big rubber wheels and great suspension and pull it backwards up or down the steps.
Detach the carrycot and then leave the chassis in a shed/entrance area/car boot.
Detach the carrycot and carry the baby up and place them somewhere safe. Then if it’s not far (and ideally if you can still see the baby) - go back for the chassis.
Put the baby in a sling and carry the folded pram up.
Just use a sling instead of a pram.
The best pram accessories
There are a number of pram accessories to make your pushing life easier and more comfortable for the baby. For example, cup holders, buggy clips and pram toys. See The most popular pram accessories for professional pushing.
For keeping a baby cool in a pram in the summer with items like sunshades and pram fans, see Summer babies: What you need.
