WHAT IS RASPBERRY LEAF TEA?
Raspberry leaf tea is made from the leaves of the raspberry plant. It often comes in tea bags for ease that you use just like any other herbal tea. If you prefer not to drink tea, it can also be bought in capsules. Don’t confuse raspberry leaf tea with raspberry fruit tea.
Why drink do pregnant women drink raspberry leaf tea?
It is drunk in the hope that it will shorten labour and help prevent a pregnancy from going too far past the due date.
Does it work?
Raspberry leaf tea has been used in late pregnancy for over two centuries but there has been very little research into its effectiveness. But some believe it tones the muscles of the womb and some studies have shown it can reduce the amount of time spent in the later stages of labour and make it less likely a pregnancy will go past 40 weeks. Others argue that you shouldn’t do anything to interfere with the body’s natural approach to birth.
when should you avoid it?
It’s not suitable for all pregnant women. Avoid if:
Your previous labour was short (three hours or less).
You are having a planned caesarian section for medical reasons.
You’ve previously had a caesarian section.
You’ve previously gone into labour prematurely.
You’ve had vaginal bleeding in the second half of your pregnancy
You’ve had (or have a family history of) breast or ovarian cancer, endometriosis or fibroids.
Your baby is breech.
You’ve had any complications in your pregnancy, including high blood pressure.
You are having twins.
You are taking any medication.
You are overdue.
When should you start drinking raspberry leaf tea?
It’s only safe from 32 weeks onwards. Most people start at around 36-38 weeks.
How often should you drink It?
Start off with one cup a day, which you can then gradually increase to 3 cups a day.
