WHAT IS A TRAVEL HIGHCHAIR?
A travel high chair is a portable seat that either folds down into a bag or has an integrated handle or shoulder strap for carrying.
Do you need a travel highchair?
They can be useful for feeding your baby on holidays, day trips, at houses of family/friends or when visiting a restaurant/café/pub which might not have a high chair. Even when an eating establishment does have high chairs, you may be concerned about their availability or cleanliness.
What are the main types of portable highchairs?
Booster seat: These can either be used low to the floor or strapped onto an adult chair. They sometimes also come with trays. E.g. Chicco Pocket Snax.
Clamp seat: These are fabric seats that clamp onto a table. They are very portable and sometimes also come with a tray. E.g. Phil and Teds Lobster.
Fabric seat: These are tied to a chair. They are great for travel as they are light and take up very little space. They do not come with a tray. E.g. totseat.
Which travel highchair should you get?
It depends on how often you eat out and whether you mind something a bit bulky or if you want something for holidays that can be stuffed into a suitcase.
The features to look out for
Weight: A travel highchair should be easy and light to carry. Some convert into a travel bag with straps or handles and some come with a travel bag.
Age range: Check the age range before you buy one as you want something with longevity and some can only be used from 12 months old.
Harness: This should be a minimum of three-point and ideally five-point.
Tray: If you want one with a tray, a removable one makes it more versatile, easier to clean and easier to put the baby in the seat.
Booster seat straps: A booster seat should have straps that tether it to the chair for safety.
Storage: Some portable highchairs have storage for feeding essentials when you’re out and about like weaning spoons, bibs and wipes.
Cleaning: To keep it clean, it’s helpful if it’s wipe-clean. Also, check if any fabric is machine washable.
Comfort: If you’ll be using it a lot, go for one with a padded seat for comfort.
Adjustable: The high chair will last longer if it is fully adjustable.
