7 of the best child-view car mirrors 2024
WHAT IS A CHILD-VIEW CAR MIRROR?
A child-view car mirror, also called a baby car mirror, is strapped onto the headrest facing a baby in their car seat. They enable the driver to keep an eye on their child using their rearview mirror.
Do you need a baby car mirror?
Babies have to be placed in rear-facing car seats until they are 15 months old but this means being unable to see them while driving.
If you are driving on your own with your child, this may be disconcerting, especially over longer distances. You may want to check they are positioned properly and not slumped forward.
If they are crying it would also be good to know why. Perhaps their dummy has fallen out, for example, or they’ve been sick. So child-view car mirrors enable you to keep an eye on them and give you peace of mind.
However, if you rarely drive longer distances with your baby and no other adults, they might not be worth the money.
Can a baby travel in the front seat?
Legally they can. But only if there is no front passenger airbag or if it has been deactivated. Otherwise, this would be both illegal and dangerous.
It’s worth bearing in mind that accidents most commonly affect the front of the car so your baby is probably safer in the back.
What to look out for when choosing a baby car mirror
How it is attached: This is usually with adjustable straps but some won’t work with fixed headrests.
Shatterproof mirror: Check the mirror is shatterproof and has been crash tested to withstand any kind of impact.
Wide angle view: This is so you can clearly and easily see your baby. Some babies enjoy seeing themselves so it can be nice if they can also do this.
Adjustable: The more easily you can adjust the mirror, the better the view you’ll have of your child.
Child-friendly mirrors: These have colourful features to entertain the baby while in the car.
Remote controlled light: If you do a lot of night driving with your child, it will be useful to be able to activate a light on the mirror so you can see them in the dark.
